Somebody’s got a case of the Mondays (links)
January 23, 2012 (2:27 PM) by Matt Benson

It is Monday, but I am actually in a great mood.  But none of you care about that.  Here are a bunch of links from the weekend and stuff that has come out this morning.

As I posted about an hour ago, Tim Ream was able to get his UK permit, which has also been confirmed by Grant Wahl and Ives.  Ream’s transfer to Bolton is being reported at roughly $3 million, which would be the highest transfer ever by a MLS defender.

The Bolton News had a story this weekend where Owen Coyle talks about targeting American talent.  One part I agree about when it comes to Ream is that he might be 24-years-old, but that is the equivalent of being 21-years-old in soccer development for an American.  But Coyle has a lot of nice things to say about Americans, so check that out.

ESPN Soccernet has their Team of the Week up.  It should come as no surprise that Clint Dempsey is among the 11 players, but Zak Whitbread also made the squad.  Whitbread helped Norwich City hold Chelsea to zero goals, Norwich’s first clean sheet of the season.

Steven Goff is hearing that Edson Buddle is being linked to Belgium club Westerlo after his trial at Everton.

Staying with the twitterverse rumors, UK writer Duncan Castles is expecting Eric Lichaj to go out on loan to Leeds United again.

And Brian Sciaretta is reporting that Jason Villagomez may sign with Polish side LKS Lodz tomorrow.

Staying with Sciaretta and his great work over at Yanks Abroad, he is also reporting that former U-20 goalkeeper Samir Badr has signed a deal with Haras El Hodood of the Egyptian Premier League.  And Jamie Hill has an interview up with Hammarby signee Billy Schuler.

The U-23’s are down in Costa Rica for two friendlies and played to a 0-0 draw against Saprissa’s reserve squad this weekend.  Here was the lineup for the match.

USA: 1-Zac MacMath; 4-Kofi Sarkodie (17-Sheanon Williams, 77), 3-Zarek Valentin (capt.) (19-Royal-Dominique Fennell, 77), 2-Sebastien Ibeagha (Andrew Wenger, 46), 5-Jorge Villafana; 6-Amobi Okugo (15-Mix Diskerud, 46), 8-Jared Jeffrey (13-Michael Stephens, 61), 10-Dilly Duka (12-Isaac Acuna, 67); 7-Freddy Adu, 9-Tony Taylor (11-Jack McInerney, 70), 11-Jack McInerney (14-Joe Corona, 46)

They have one more match in Costa Rica before camp ends.  Studio 90 also has two new videos with the U-23s.  The first one is of Jurgen Klinsmann talking to the team before their second scrimmage against the USMNT last week.  And the second one is of the team preparing for their scrimmages down in Costa Rica.

And if you missed it earlier this morning, I did an Inside the Numbers piece on Bill Hamid’s debut for the USMNT.

A little bit of this and a little bit of that
January 19, 2012 (12:04 AM) by Matt Benson

Still no USMNT/U-23 highlights from the second scrimmage, as I post this late at night, but there are some photos here and here.

I tweeted this last night, but Grant Wahl was on some radio show/podcast in the UK talking about Tim Ream and Edson Buddle.  You can listen to it here.

Speaking of Edson Buddle, Phil Neville had the tweet of the day regarding the American invasion of Everton.

We’ve got howard donavon hannaman buddle at training today thought I’d joined an MLS team for a minute #yankseverywere

According to Ives, Tim Ream’s work permit hearing should be next week.  With Alejandro Bedoya and now Robbie Rogers able to get one this year, you would think that Ream should be able to get his.

Also coming from Ives today is that Gale Agbossoumonde turned down a move to the MLS this week in order to see out his final year of his deal with Traffic Sports.  Since his loan deal with Eintracht Frankfurt is now over, he is expected to play with the Carolina Railhawks of the NASL this upcoming season with an eye to move to Europe once he becomes a free agent.

Staying with the Traffic Sports theme, I missed that Tony Taylor’s loan deal with Atletico CP is now over and he is already back with the Traffic Sports-affiliated Estoril, logging 30 minutes off the bench on January 8, although did not dress in their next game this past weekend due to the U-23 camp.

As for Taylor’s now former teammate at Atletico CP, goalkeeper Caleb Patterson-Sewell, it looks like the New York Red Bulls are wondering about his availability.

As for another goalkeeper, Josh Wicks, reports out of Finland have some mystery European team contacting IFK Mariehamn about his services.

Continuing with the Google translate fun, this article from Germany has Hoffenheim manager Holger Stanislawski saying some nice things about Joe Gyau.

Billy Schuler talked to the Independent Weekly about choosing to play in Sweden over the MLS.

And finally, some tweets from Brian Sciaretta with some interesting tidbits.  First off, UMass midfielder Jason Villagomez is on trial with LKS Lodz in Poland.   And U-20 players Juan Ocegueda and Uvaldo Luna will be participating in a camp with Mexico’s U-20 team one week after participating in the US U-20 camp this month.
