Some former Americans in Europe have been found thanks to the NASL
February 7, 2012 (9:10 PM) by Howie Michaels

The North American Soccer League, the 900th different fledgling attempt at second-division second stateside, released their combine list today. Included are a number of former OT-featured players:

– Vincenzo Bernardo (who actually finished last year with the Harrisburg City Islanders of USL Pro), who spent time in Italy and Austria

– Erik Opsahl who played briefly with Reading before landing in the Swedish 3rd tier for a spell

– Jamel Johnson, frequently confused with Jemal Johnson, who spent some in the Danish 2nd tier

Gale Agbossoumonde has also been said to be set to be loaned to the Carolina Railhawks (which would be different than showing up at the combine) although we’ll have more on that if it ever becomes official.

In semi-related news, Jeremiah White was released from camp by the New England Revolution today. Hard to believe  a guy once capped after a good season in Denmark now can’t make perhaps the worst team in MLS.

Some late night link action
February 3, 2011 (12:39 AM) by Matt Benson

I would have posted these earlier, but I had a “date” with this guy tonight.  He is an athletic freak.

Some bad news for Robbie Findley fans.  After finally securing his UK work permit and a visa, he injured his thigh in one of his first training sessions and could be out up to 12 weeks.  Ouch.

We have had a Ryan Guy sighting!  Howie posted a couple weeks ago that Guy was leaving Ireland and looking to return to the US and join a MLS squad.  The 25-year-old winger was spotted in the Portland Timbers’ training camp this past week.  Hopefully he does enough to impress and gets a contract.

As for some post-transfer window stuff.  Jamie Hill caught up with Erik Opsahl to talk about his move to Reading.  Jon Levy gives his USMNT transfer deadline ratings.  And Greg Seltzer analyzes all the loan deals made this past month.

Who likes that Boon-Boo-Ree?  Sporting Kansas City wisely jumped on the Boon-Boo-Ree bandwagon and had a t-shirt contest with the winners being made and sold right here.

And finally, those wanting to see where each team will be playing during the Gold Cup this summer will have to wait until March as the draw was postponed roughly a month.  Boo CONCACAF.  Boo.

Catching up on the last day of the silly season
January 31, 2011 (2:48 PM) by Matt Benson

Of course I get sick on the last day of the transfer window, so I slept in and missed a lot of the fun.  Here is what has happened so far.

Michael Bradley’s loan deal to Aston Villa is now official.  Manager Gerard Houllier has some words on Mikey right here.  Aston Villa’s website also has a picture gallery of him holding the jersey right here.  He is going to wear #13 for those ready to purchase a jersey.

I haven’t seen anything on either team’s website yet, but sources have told Ives and Greg Seltzer that Fulham striker Eddie Johnson will be going out on loan to Championship club Preston North End for the rest of the season.  Mark Hughes has given Johnson a chance this season as he has appeared in 11 games in 2010-11, his most in a season since coming over to Fulham, but with Bobby Zamora and other forward options getting healthy, he probably wasn’t going to play much in the second half of the season.  ***UPDATE*** Preston North End’s website has something up on the loan deal now.

While Robbie Findley had his UK work permit approved a couple weeks ago, he headed back to the US to get his visa.  Two weeks passed and nothing else was ever said (he wasn’t listed on Nottingham Forest’s roster on their website the last two weeks), but he has reappeared today as he has secured his visa and his move to Forest has now been completed.

Jozy Altidore’s name has been thrown around a lot in the last 24 hours on twitter and other sources (Bursaspor and Levante getting the most play), but there hasn’t been any real news to report.  So there is nothing to report with him as of now.

Also in the being talked about, but nothing to report as of yet news, Ives is hearing that a Charlie Davies loan deal is being worked on right now.

Twenty-year-old forward Vincenzo Bernardo is now with Austrian third-division club FC Höchst on a short-term deal for the rest of the season.

According to Greg Seltzer, the word out of Sweden is that Djurgarden is trying to swing a deadline deal with Gale Agbossoumonde, who has been on trial with the club the last two weeks.

In that same blog post, he is also hearing that Mike Grella wants to head back to Carlisle United for another loan spell.  With his options limited, it would give him the best chance at playing time compared to staying at Leeds United for the rest of the season.

English League Championship side Reading have signed 18-year-old midfielder Erik Opsahl.  He has been training with Reading the last couple weeks after playing at St John’s University this past season.

It looks like Jemal Johnson has reappeared in Bulgaria with Lokomotiv Sofia after leaving MK Dons last month.

Arch Bell of Yanks Abroad is reporting that goalkeeper Colin Burns will be going out on loan to Norwegian Adeccoligaen club Sandefjord for the 2011 season.  Burns was on Sarpsborg 08 last season, helping them get promoted from the Adeccoligaen to the Eliteserien, but the move should allow for him to get more playing time as he appeared in only three games for Sarpsborg 08 in 2010.

And finally, some non-transfer news, but the USMNT’s friendly against Egypt has been canceled.  It is not too surprising with all the issues going on in Egypt right now.  And it probably would be too hard to find a replacement game on such short notice for many different reasons.

That is it for now.  I will try to post more later if anything else happens.
