Soony Saad is off to Europe
January 27, 2011 (8:56 PM) by Howie Michaels

University of Michigan freshman Soony Saad, who led the NCAA in scoring with 19 goals (some of them really good) in 2010 while guiding the Wolverines to a surprising College Cup appearance, has opted to leave school to pursue his options professionally in Europe. Ives has the story at

“I’m currently in Europe trying to pursue a professional career,” Saad told Fox Soccer. “I already left my college.”

Saad identified four clubs he is in talks with for trials. Bayern Munich, Anderlecht, SC Freiburg and 1860 Munich are teams he has plans to spend time with in the coming weeks as he searches for his first professional contract.

Michigan has now lost a couple of guys to Europe now as Sean Cunningham (who recently signed with Molde in Norway) was originally going to be his teammate next year.

It is hard to say how Saad will do finding a job in Europe. Obviously, college soccer and any league in Europe are entirely different games, especially for a 19 year-old who is considered a long shot to make his nation’s U-20 team. On the other hand, the last freshman to score 18 or more goals in college soccer was Vedad Ibišević at Saint Louis University in 2003. Ibišević has scored 41 goals in the last 3.5 seasons in the Bundesliga, so maybe the jump can be made.
