Some links and news for Friday
   January 21, 2011 (5:12 PM) by Matt Benson

Before diving into the links from across the interwebs, this site has actually produced some stuff worth checking out (shocking, I know).

* Howie’s preview for tomorrow’s friendly
* What’s your starting XI for Saturday?
* Over There Book/Sticker Contest: Pick the US-Chile score
* Edson Buddle’s goal for FC Ingolstadt

Now for some news.

FIFA has stopped Mike Grella’s loan deal to Motherwell.  FIFA doesn’t allow for a player to play for three or more clubs in a single season (he has played with both Leeds United and Carlisle United in 2010-11).  Both clubs thought the loan deal would be able to go through since his loan deal to Carlisle United was considered an “emergency loan” outside the transfer window.  But it doesn’t look like FIFA is going to overturn anything since they are not Liverpool (I am looking at you, Javier Mascherano in 2006-07).

Not surprising, but Brad Guzan enjoys playing in real games and wants to extend his loan at Hull City.  It looks like Hull City manager Nigel Pearson is going to ask Aston Villa to extend Guzan’s loan deal until the end of February.

While it was first thought that Jon-Paul Pittman would not return to playing with the reserve squad until February, Mr. Pittman came back this week to play 60 minutes and score twice in Wycombe Wanderers’ 4-0 victory over Burnham in a local cup (Berks & Bucks Cup).  And now it looks like he could be on the bench this weekend when Wycombe hosts Rotherham United.

A couple of young Americans, Rhett Bernstein and Mike Zaher, are on trial at Norwegian Adeccoligaen side Mjøndalen (a second division club who also has American Graham Dugoni on their roster).

It looks like Jermaine Jones could be featured in Blackburn Rovers’ starting lineup this weekend as they host West Brom.

And finally, some last minute previews and stories on the USMNT as they take on Chile tomorrow:

* ‘Wondo’ rides whirlwind to U.S. national team [SoccerAmerica]
* DeLaGarza ready to step up for USMNT [Yanks Abroad]
* Opportunity knocks for young players [ESPN Soccernet]
* Young US side faces Chile at HDC [MLSsoccer.com]
* Fresh start for Bradley’s new boys [FIFA.com]

I am headed to the game tomorrow, so I will share my thought late tomorrow night once I get home.  I am also going to take a few photos from around the stadium as well.  Hopefully get those up sometime over the weekend.  And don’t forget to sign up for our contest.
